How to play

A short guide to PlayVesto as it works today. The intended game rules are on the Rules page.

The current demo

PlayVesto is a virtual market in hockey-team shares. Everything uses virtual credits and trading is simulated; credits can't be bought or withdrawn.

The current season is the NHL-themed demo. In that season only:

  • NHL-style team names and colours are display labels. Each one stands for an underlying test team.
  • It is not connected to real NHL games or results.
  • It is trading-only: dividends and redemption payouts are unavailable in this demo.

Competitive standings are not available yet. PlayVesto is a fictional game. Team names, icons and figures are invented placeholders with no affiliation to any real league, club or organisation.

Your starting portfolio

An activated account receives a starting portfolio of cash plus shares in teams. Starting amounts are set per season and may differ between seasons and accounts.

Signing up does not create a portfolio by itself, and trading needs a separate permission.

Checking your account…

Buying and selling

  • Bid is the highest price someone will pay; ask is the lowest price someone will sell for; the spread is the gap between them.
  • Every order has a limit price and a quantity. A buy limit is the most you'll pay; a sell limit is the least you'll accept.
  • An order can fill straight away, fill partly, or stay open. It only executes when another player takes the other side.
  • Last Trade is the most recent execution. It isn't a guaranteed price for your next order.
  • Quick Buy and Quick Sell fill in the order ticket for you. They never send an order.

Available and reserved

  • A buy order reserves cash; a sell order reserves shares.
  • Reserved amounts are still yours and count in your totals. Available is what you can use for new orders.
  • Cancelling releases the unfilled part once the server confirms. Parts that already filled can't be cancelled.

Reading your portfolio

  • Value at development reference uses reference prices recorded for this development phase. They are not approved Official Marks.
  • Value at Last Trade is indicative only.
  • Average cost is what you paid on average for the shares you hold. Unrealised gain/loss compares that to Last Trade and leaves out dividends and realised results.
  • "No price" means a team has no usable price yet. "Basis unavailable" means your cost can't be worked out from the records. When a reference's age is unknown, we say so rather than guess.

Managing orders

  • Orders & Activity has three tabs: Open Orders, Order History and Trades.
  • Partly filled orders keep their fills; you can cancel the rest. Every execution is recorded under Trades.
  • If sending or cancelling an order shows an uncertain result, use the check/retry the screen offers rather than sending it again. That way nothing is duplicated.

Pilot eligibility

Signing up and taking part are separate. Anyone can create an account and confirm their email. Competitive activation — receiving a starting portfolio — is by invitation for the pilot.

The invited pilot is intended for one competitive account and one starting grant per person per season. The system enforces one grant per account; it does not independently verify that each account belongs to a different person.

Different people who share a home, school, office or network are welcome to take part, each with their own account.

Intentional gifting means coordinated trading meant to give another account an artificial competitive advantage. Ordinary trading, losing trades and trading often with the same profitable counterparty are not gifting.

If we ever ask you a question about your activity, being asked is not itself a penalty.

Coming later

Sports-linked dividends and redemption, live results and competitive standings are part of the intended game described on the Rules page. They are not available in the current demo.
